Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail
Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail

  • 1 teaspoon fine sugar (or 1 sugar cube)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 drops water
  • 2 fluid ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
  • ice cubs, as desired
  • optional garnish: orange peel, maraschino cherry

  1. Put sugar in a cocktail glass; add bitters and water.
  2. Pour whiskey over the sugar and stir to dissolve.
  3. Drop ice cubes into glass; stir.
  4. Garnish your cocktail with an orange peel and cherry to serve.
Mealthy tip:

An orange peel and a maraschino cherry are the classic adornments for an Old Fashioned, but feel free to use what's in season to give your cocktail a fresh spin. A thin slice of apple would be perfect in the Fall.

Bill Austin says:

This is one of my favorite cocktails. I like to use a little homemade simple syrup in mine and a drop of liquid smoke to give it that good smokey Peet flavor.

Larry Franklin says:

I was looking for a new drink to try out with my cigars and this one fits the bill. The bourbon and bitters offer a nice balance that compliments a full bodied stogie.
